Support Group for Transitioning MTF Persons Under 30 Years of Age

facilitated by Maddie Deutsch, MD

(posted 10-Apr-2008)

Hello.  In response to what appears to be a great need, I am glad to announce that I will begin hosting a monthly support group meeting for transwomen under the age of 30.

I have developed this resource in response to comments by younger transwomen that they at times feel lost in general community support groups or among groups that have a strong presence of later-in-life transitioners.  This group will be a drop in support and chat group. The group will meet on the first Wednesday of the month in the conference room at my Downtown Los Angeles office.

The group's main goal is to provide a safe and comfortable space for young transitioned, transitioning and transition-questioning transwomen to explore themselves in a social and supportive milleu.  Emphasis will be placed on developing social skills and confidence in their (now correct) gender role, in the context of communication, making friends, exploring new interests, etc....  The group will be casual and conversational, but carefully moderated to maintain a productive and safe environment for all.  In addition to "check-in" and free form time, A topic will be chosen each week by the group for specific focus.  Suggested topics include coming out to family/friends, transitioning in high school/college/grad school, job searching, finding your own apartment, building a social life, dating and relationships.  While questioning persons are welcome to attend, conversation will be focused on issues pertaining to transition as opposed to discussing the "Am I trans?" question.

The age of 30 is an arbitrary cut off age and is obviously flexible on a case by case basis.  I will reserve the right to restrict participation of anyone who is not appropriate to the group for reasons of relevance, demeanor, etc...  For example, a single 33 year old transwoman who is in graduate school would fit right in, while a married 24 year old parent of two children in an established career may not find the group helpful.

Above all, respect, courtesy and the willingness to develop good conversational (including listening) skills are the only true requirement for participation.  A $5 suggested donation is requested, no one is turned away due to lack of funds.

The group's first meeting will be Wednesday, March 5th at 7:30pm.  My office is at 417 S. Hill St, #201, LA 90013 in the Subway Terminal Building at Metro 417.  The building is located off of Pershing Square and is easily accessed by MTA bus as well as the Red Line subway.  Street parking is free at this hour, and if lot parking is needed, the pay lots across the street from the building and just south of the building are flat rate $4.  No parking is available in my building.

Attendees may dress and present themselves in anyway they wish to do so.  My building is a safe space, and in fact downtown in general is quite safe.  On arrival, attendees should announce themselves at the security desk and ask to be rung up to Dr. Deutsch's office.

Significant Other Support Group by Cindie Henrie, MFT

(posted 26-June-2007)

I just wanted to send a reminder out to let everyone know that the “Significant Other Support Group” for women with transgendered, cross-dressing or partners who are exploring their gender is continuing to be a highly successful group. There are currently two openings for the group. Women appropriate for this group are women who are committed to their relationship and who want to remain in the relationship with their transgendered partner. It is a group aimed at supporting partners and helping them explore their experience of being a spouse, girlfriend or significant other of a transgendered person. It is a closed group and members must make a minimum of a 6 month commitment to the group.

Thank you!
